Bubbalou’s Bodacious BBQ in Altamonte Springs, FL

Published on May 15, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

BubbaLou’s bodacious barbecue is a pretty cool spot here in Altamonte Springs. The one thing I really love about BubbaLou’s is the fact they seem to always have a lunch special that’s very easy on the wallet and good on the tummy! For instance on Mondays they have a $3 pulled pork sandwich. How in the world can you beat that kind of deal?

Another cool thing they offer to kids is a free snowcone with a purchase of a meal. Adults also can get a snow cone but it’s $1. Either way it’s a great addition to an already southern classic feel as you enter the building.

As I walked into BubbaLou’s Bodacious barbecue I noticed they had a huge trophy case of T-shirts that they had for sale. I did not purchase one but I kind of felt bad for not buying one after I left because it was so good.
As usual I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and french fries with a side of baked beans. That always seems to be my go to meal at a new barbecue restaurant. After I ordered my meal the lady at the counter gave me a wooden spoon with a number on it. At first this confused me but then I realized that is how they know what I order. Another great Southern classic! Just when I think that this place can’t get any cooler I realize that they have Cheerwine!! Yes, cheerwine!!! The legend!!

So as I finally get my sandwich I noticed the pulled pork is stacked on a hoagie bun. I never had a pulled pork sandwich brought out on a hoagie but there is a first for everything. The sandwich was very good and definitely a different feel because the hoagie was toasted. I tried a few other different sauces that they offered and I couldn’t find one that wasn’t good. They literally have different sauces to please anyone’s type of barbecue. Finally someone gets it!

I deathly will go back to Bubba Lou’s bodacious barbecue because I definitely need to try the ribs and other sandwiches. If my first visit is anything like the next few, I have a feeling this could be my favorite barbecue place in Orlando…I mean Altamonte Springs.

Also follow them on twitter for BBQ advice, it’s great to see local restaurants use social media. @BubbalousBBQ

Kojak’s BBQ in Tampa, FL

Published on May 4, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

Kojak’s is my favorite BBQ place in Tampa, during football season I would get takeout from there every Sunday for the 4 PM games. It has been family owned and operated since 1970′s, which is another reason I love this place. Kojak’s is nested under huge oak trees that surround the property and give it a southern feel. I also sit outside because the trees block the Florida sun perfectly. The pulled pork is very tender and juicy, with huge portions. The ribs were a little dry but they were definitely meaty and tender. Their sides here are absolutely fantastic, their parsley potatoes are probably the best side they do offer. The baked beans were very sweet and tasted differently than most beans, I definitely enjoyed them.

All in all this is one of my favorite places to eat at in Tampa. The service is excellent and the ambience of the place is very southern and relaxing. A front porch feel !

Smok’n Pig BBQ in Valdosta, GA

Published on February 28, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

Smok’n pig in Valdosta is one of the best BBQ places I’ve been to. The parking lot is basically 3 lots to hold everyone. It’s always packed at Smok’n Pig.

I ordered the Carolina Special, which is pulled pork, piled high with coleslaw. Let me tell you, it was so good, I didn’t need to add sauce…but I did, cause their sauce is too good.

With my sides, I had baked beans, Mac and cheese, and a sweet potato something that was dessert. Smok’n Pig is one of my favorite places in Georgia and I highly recommend it.

Jack’s Old South BBQ. Braselton, GA

Published on February 8, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

I found Jack’s from the TV show “Pit
Masters”. I’ve always wanted to try their brand of barbecue, being that they are a three-time world champion, I figured it had to be good. I was right!

As you enter Jack’s Barbecue, you have a feeling that you’re entering a ski lodge. They have log booths that everyone sits in. A lot of the eclectic souvenirs are hung all over the wall too. One particular wall has Myron’s secret sauces and a lot of his dry rubs, that are available for purchase.

I ordered the pulled pork with coleslaw and fries. I also has two small samples of the Brunswick stew and baked beans.

The pulled pork that I had was probably the most tender pork, I have ever had in my entire life, It was that good. If you know me very well, you know I’m very particular about my coleslaw, so particular that I’m kinda a snob about it. Well, Jack’s slaw was on point like no other!

With their baked beans, they did something very special and unique. The cooked them in a Cinnamon applesauce and even had one or two slices of cinnamon apple in the beans. I’m not a huge fan of baked beans but these were very good and sweet.

All in all….I really liked Jack’s. He’s a 3X world champion and he’s not one to do anything real fancy. Keeps it simple and good. 20130207-193119.jpg

Saw’s BBQ in Birmingham, AL

Published on January 31, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

As you enter Saw’s barbecue, you’ll immediately notice the driver’s license plates on all over the wall. You can even write on the wall and if you look hard enough, you’ll see my signature.

Saw’s BBQ might be the best I’ve ever had. The pulled pork comes piled high and dripping with sauce. On first bite, you’re greeted with soft, juicy, delicate pork. Second bite, you’re greeted with a pickle that does a two step of delight on your taste buds. When you order your meal ask for the “roll tide sauce”. I also had a rib and as expected, it was great.

Sides were decent too, except the cole slaw but I’m particular on my slaw. I really enjoy Saw’s because its a local spot. If you meet the owner, ask him how he earned the nickname, Saw. It’s a great story and you’ll laugh.

Dreamland BBQ in Birmingham, AL

Published on January 30, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

Dreamland barbecue was highly recommended by a local in Birmingham. They did mention that the original dreamland barbecue, in Tuscaloosa, would be 10 times better than this one.

This dreamland was a little bit more commercialized than what I expected, they did try and keep the “old school” feel to it. I ordered the pulled pork, coleslaw, beans, ribs, and banana pudding.

I was kinda disappointed with the ribs. They were highly recommended but didn’t live up to anything more than average. The sandwich was decent and the sides were as good as expected. The banana pudding was absolutely delightful.

I’ll probably never revisit this dreamland but I do plan on going to the Tuscaloosa one, the original.

Kay Brothers BBQ, Gainesville FL

Published on January 25, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

Kay Bros BBQ is located off University Ave in Gainesville, Fl. Right in the heart of Gator Country. Kay Bros has a college feel as you walk in, they have beer taps screwed into an aluminum wall. Very eclectic and fitting. Kay Bros Offers numerous types of different barbecue dishes as well as caters to the non-barbecue types, with burgers and buffalo chicken sandwiches.

I’ve had numerous sandwiches here, but always seem to go back to the pulled pork sandwich. I had the spare ribs but wasn’t impressed at all. Every sandwich I have had was great, they seem to always outdo themselves with every side dish. They do sides better than anyone I know.

They do a baked mac & cheese, that rivals my grandmother’s. This is extremely hard to do since she makes hers from scratch, somehow they seem to manage. The onion rings are enormous, and they never seem to let me down when I order them. They also have new french fries that come straight from potatoes peeled that day, you can tell how fresh they are.

Kay Brothers has a southern barbecue feel with a little bit of Midwestern taste. You would think this would be hard to blend but they do it seamlessly.

I definitely recommend eating at Kay Brothers. A few times I was there they had $.75 drafts. Anytime you offer $.75 drafts and great barbecue, you can’t go wrong.

Adam’s Ribs in Gainesville, FL

Published on January 13, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

Adam’s Ribs in Gainesville is a locally owned establishment. As you enter, it has an old school diner feel, with the same great service you’d expect. Adam’s is a Sunday afternoon tradition for my friends and I, seriously, we should buy stock in this place.

The pulled pork is great here, especially when you get it topped off with coleslaw. I always get the big deal, which includes a sandwich, one rib, and a side. The ribs here are huge, I mean like they could be off a prehistoric hog.

I’ve ordered the brisket here a few times and I must say, its better than some of the brisket I’ve had in Texas. For Florida, I’ll rate Adam’s #1 for brisket.

Adam’s also makes their own barbecue sauce which lines the front bar. Probably around 20 different sauces are here. Which you can purchase.

Adam’s is a must stop while in Gainesville, if you are ever here around 1 PM on Sunday, you can probably spot me at the end of the bar.

Angel’s BBQ in Savannah, Ga

Published on January 9, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

As I walk in, I feel like I’m entering something from the 1920′s but hey, that’s Savannah. Little hole in the wall that you’ll defiantly miss if you blink. Locally owned and operated by a couple, whom meet you with a smile.

I ordered the BBQ plate with two sides. Pulled pork, Mac and cheese, and fries. The BBQ pork sandwich came with slaw on the bun, so I was already in love. Words cannot describe this sandwich, it was that great. The Mac and cheese was on point! I’m talking like Jordan in game 5, on point. The fries were your average fries but still good.

I also had a small side of baked beans and collard greens. Angel uses a special recipe for his baked beans and you can tell.

By not coming to Angel’s BBQ you are doing a huge injustice to yourself. This is a must stop in Savannah !

Blowin’ Smoke BBQ

Published on January 8, 2013, by in Bbq Blog.

Walked into Blowin’ Smoke, in Savannah, Ga. It was a little fancy for my BBQ taste, I’m more of a “hole in the wall” kinda guy. Either way I could smell the barbecue from outside and it smelled good. As I walked in I noticed their quality beer selection, If you know me you know I enjoy a good cold beer.

The waitress was very nice and knowledgeable about the entire menu and the sauces they offered. One thing that I actually fell in love with, they poured my iced tea in a mason jar. I am a sucker for drinks out of a mason jar! Seriously, you could kick my car and give me a bourbon mixed drink in a mason jar and I wouldn’t care about the car.

I ordered the pulled pork with a side of St. Louis style baby back ribs, collard greens and mac & cheese. The pulled pork was decent but the ribs were my favorite. The sauce lined my fingers and dripped off the bones. As for the greens, I could have another bowl! Those things were delicious. As far as the Mac & cheese… I made better as a college freshman, in a dorm using a microwave.
All-in-all it was above average BBQ that I would defiantly eat at again. The service was great and the mason jars got me.
